My son picked up the Harry Potter series again recently. He finished reading the series years ago. My daughter has read through the series MANY times. There's just something about rereading a favorite book. While the story has so many great plot moments and humorous asides; I think it is the characters they go back for. Like revisiting an old friend. And, reading about the characters first really makes you feel so much closer to them.
It's similar to the impact Star Wars left on my generation. Often Star Wars comes up with friends I've meet throughout my life. I loved the movies and have enjoyed getting reacquainted with my "old friends" story the last three Decembers. As an added bonus, being able to share it with my kids. Now we have both Star Wars and Harry Potter in common.
Also, I did enjoy the "Last Jedi" despite the fact that it could have been cut down a little from 2 and a half hours.
